MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY:

Jesus said, "Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the One who sent me" (Mt. 10:40).

College can be a lonely time where it is difficult to find quality friendships which last. To assist others in their quest to build quality relationships - with God and each other - you are directly answering your Baptismal call. Consider, as a start, one of these possible, and easy, opportunities:

Greeter

"I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of the wicked."

(Ps 84:11)

Your willingness to welcome all who come to our Masses and to assist them in 'finding a home with us' is to offer others the healing and welcoming hand of Christ. Your role of Greeter, here at the Newman Catholic Center, is one of offering a friendly, welcoming presence to those coming to worship, securing seating for latecomers and remaining available in the event of any emergencies.

Usher

"For the sake of my relatives and friends, I will say, 'Peace be with you!' For the sake of the house of our Lord, I will pray for your good." (Ps 122:8-9)"

Your willingness to serve in the role of the Usher, here at the Newman Catholic Center, is one of providing assistance in taking up the collection, potentiallly providing assistance at the time of the presentation of the gifts and at Communion, providing assistance in the dissemination of the parish bulletin "Communitas" and other flyers and participating in the "all-important" clean-up of the Chapel after the completion of each Mass (tidying bookracks and raising all kneelers).

For training or more information about either of these vital ministries, contact Mark Callahan at: mcallahan@external.umass.edu, AOL Instant Messenger: UMassMCNewman, (413) 549-0300 ext. 36.

MID-WEEK HOSPITALITY OPPORTUNITIES:

Presence in the Center.

Please consider being available to welcome those who enter our doors! Our Center is open from early-morning to late-at-night seven days a week, and it would be awesome to always have greeters around to welcome the people who come and go! In addition to the members of the Pastoral Staff, the Newman Students office is always looking for 'courageous volunteers' to provide a 'student presence.' Our busy cafeteria is always a great spot to meet new friends and encourage them to see what "upstairs" has to offer. Perhaps you could provide that friendly face, that helpful hand, or that role of support for someone searching or in need. Training is available. Won't you help us meet those who yearn for opportunities to augment their academic pursuits with the Christian ideals and offerings of our Newman community? Contact any member of the Pastoral Staff or any Newman Student Association Leader if you are willing to offer an hour or more each week for this important aspect of Hospitality.

Spreading the Word.

Please consider how you can offer your gifts so that others may become aware of all that is available to them! If you have a knack for designing flyers, or if you don't mind copying or hanging them, let us know! If you are willing to assist with outreach beyond our building (via numerous methods), we would love to know! So many have said they never knew what great things Newman had to offer until it was too late...perhaps you can lend a hand in spreading the word and helping others to find Christ during their college years! Contact any member of the Pastoral Staff for details, or the Newman Student Association Publicity Committee at 413-549-0300 ext. 11.
