Taizé Prayer
"Ah, Taizé, that little springtime!" -- Pope John XXIII

Gather in the beautifully candlelit Chapel for meditative song, Scripture readings, and silence. The acoustics of the Newman Chapel are unmatched for this beautiful, ecumenical form of worship. Open to all people of good will, brought by the Newman Student Association from 8-9 pm. on the First Monday of the month during the academic year. (Fall 2009: 10/5, 11/2, 12/7) (Spring 2010: 2/1, 3/1, 4/5, 5/3).

There are two ways to participate: 1) as a member of the gathering, taking up the choir's cue in song and silence; and 2) as a member of the Taizé Choir, initiating and leading the simple, haunting sung refrains and holding the group in reverent silence. The choir sits among those gathered to pray. If interested in choir participation rehearse with us 6:45-7:45 pm. on Taizé prayer nights. For more information: Mark Callahan, Campus Minister/Director of Music. Email mcallahan@external.umass.edu.

"I am convinced that if more and more people unite themselves interiorly to the Lord's prayer 'that all may be one' (Jn 17: 21), then this prayer, made in the Name of Jesus, will not go unheard." -- Pope Benedict XVI, in remarks dedicated to the founder Roger Schultz, Founder of Taizé

Communion Service
"The soul hungers for God, and nothing but God can satiate it. Therefore He came to dwell on earth and assumed a Body in order that this Body might become the Food of our souls" -- St. John Vianney

Within the Roman Catholic Church a communion service is distinguished from a Mass. (For guidelines on reception of communion see Guidelines. For the Mass schedule see the main calendar on our home page.) We offer communion services on Mondays and Tuesdays at 12:15 pm. and some other occasions. For a treatment on communion services by Catholics United for the Faith, see communion service.

Vespers
"... at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart ..." -- Luke 18:1

Vespers, or Night Prayers, is a part of the Divine Office prayed by millions of Roman Catholics daily. Join Fr. Doug in the Chapel for night prayers any Sunday through Wednesday, or Friday, 5:15-5:30 pm. Texts and guidance will be provided. To read a simple introduction to Vespers visit USCCB:Vespers.

Adoration
""What wonderful majesty! What stupendous condescension! O sublime humility! That the Lord of the whole universe, God and the Son of God, should humble Himself like this under the form of a little bread, for our salvation." -- Saint Francis of Assisi

Each week from 4-6:30 pm on Wednesdays and 4-5:15 pm on Fridays, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed as we practice extended silence in Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. And, on Thursday Nights beginning at 7 we pray the Rosary and practice Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Have you wondered if it was 'okay' to pray the Rosary while adoring the Lord face to face? It is more than okay! During the Year of the Eucharist, Pope John Paul II pointed out that during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, in addition to reading the Bible, keeping silence, and chanting, one could also pray the Rosary. He explained, "The Rosary itself, when it is profoundly understood in the biblical and christocentric form which I recommended in the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, will prove a particularly fitting introduction to Eucharistic contemplation, a contemplation carried out with Mary as our companion and guide." Have you seen the postings re: Adoration on Youtube? There's a classic by Tony Melendez and a neat montage of photos and text at You Are My God".
