About the Newman Catholic Center

Ultimately, the mission of the Newman Catholic Center is, in the words of our  Director, Fr Doug McGonagle, "to get as many souls into Heaven as possible!" while having some fun along the way. The Newman Catholic Center opened on April 1st, 1963. It was the dream of Msgr. David Powers to have a facility near the growing UMass campus where students and faculty could go for their spiritual as well as intellectual growth.  Built by Bishop Weldon, the Newman Catholic Center was then and is now one of the largest Catholic missions to be found on a secular college campus. From the start, Fr Joe Quigley, known and beloved by generations of UMass students, was there when the Center's doors open as Msgr. Powers' assistant. For over 40 years, the Newman Catholic Center has helped students get through UMass, in four years, with a degree, while having some fun along the way. The Newman Center is, for many students, a home away from home. The staff likes to tell students, 'treat the Center as your living room and kitchen while you're on campus... just don't leave you're clothes on the floor or dirty dishes in the sink!' So, why not stop by? Come and talk with our staff and find out how Newman can help you get through UMass in four years, with a degree, while having some fun along the way!
