Cardinal Newman Short Story Competition
2008 Competition Results: The Newman Catholic Center is pleased to announce the results of the 2008 Cardinal Newman Short Story Competition. There were a total of nine stories submitted representing three of the Five Colleges. The jurists wish to commend all the writers for their work and heartily encourage you to continue writing. Once again, congratulations to all who participated in the 2008 Cardinal Newman Short Story Competition. | | Guidelines for the 2009 competition: The Newman Catholic Center announces the 2009 Cardinal Newman Short Story Competition, open to undergraduate creative writers of all faiths from the Five Colleges. First prize will be $300, second prize will be $200. First and second prize stories, along with up to three Honorable Mentions, will be published in a commemorative booklet to be distributed to Newman community members, Alumni & Friends. The Competition is meant to encourage writers who exhibit a “Catholic” sensibility or worldview informed by Faith and nurtured by Grace. Topics may include, but are not limited to, Grace, Redemption, Sin, Charity, Forgiveness, Faith, and Free Will, following in the tradition of such writers as Willa Cather, Shusaku Endo, Graham Green, C.S. Lewis, Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy and Evelyn Waugh, to name a few. Please submit one unpublished short story to: newmanumass.fiction@gmail.com Include your story as an attachment. - All submissions must be 8-10 pages, double-spaced and in 12-point Times New Roman.
- Include your name, mail address, email address, Five College affiliation, major, and expected year of graduation on a separate cover sheet.
- All submissions should be edited carefully.
- Original short fiction only.
The final deadline is Friday, Dec. 12th at 5:00p. Early submissions are encouraged. Competition results will be announced at the Newman Book Club meeting on April 1st, 2009 (no fooling). Winners will also be notified by mail. |
